In response to the COVID Catch-Up Government Funded Summer Schools initiative, to support schools, CREATE Education produced a complete summer school package including two fully resourced practical projects. These allowed students to get hands on and creative with technology whilst developing new skills. The projects were designed to be delivered by non-specialists and were supported with a comprehensive package of resources, online staff training, hardware and software.

Bristol Metropolitan Academy were interested in the programme but had very specific requirements in terms of hardware and activity timings and also required support in delivering the summer school enrichment activities.

CREATE Education worked closely with the school to develop a bespoke package of workshop activities and hardware (including a Dremel 3D45, an Einscan SE Desktop Scanner and a Mayku Formbox) . We further assisted the school by delivering the workshops during their Summer School week.

In this guest blog, Bristol Metropolitan Academy Design and Technology Technician, Lisa shares her experience of the summer school enrichment program.

We would just like to say massive thank you to the team at CREATE Education for what has been a fantastic experience for both students and staff at Bristol Metropolitan Academy.

This was our first venture into the world of 3D printing and we have been really impressed with the whole process. It can be overwhelming even trying to choose the most suitable 3D printer with so many on the market, and the team at CREATE were really helpful providing lots of clear information about a range of printers, talking us through the features which made it really easy to understand the differences between the machines.

CREATE Education were able to design a bespoke summer enrichment programme and equipment package for us to suit our needs and provided all the resources and training to make it a stress-free experience. The support has been brilliant with excellent professional and friendly customer service throughout. The resources are clear and well planned meaning everything was in place well ahead of time for a smooth week of 3D printing!

The week long program was delivered by CREATE, running 3 taster sessions in the mornings where we made chocolates and a longer Ancient Egypt workshop in the afternoons (Ancient Egypt). The way the sessions were delivered was brilliant. The sessions were inspiring, thought provoking, interesting, fun and informative. The students were fully engaged, smiling all the way through, and many liked it so much that they came back each day to do it all again!

As staff we have also thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot from the sessions. It was really helpful to see an expert in action on how to deliver the projects, giving us lots of ideas on how we can run KS3 projects with our students in the future. The new equipment we now have opens up lots of opportunities for KS4 design and manufacturing, particularly relevant to the current GCSE contextual challenges. We can’t wait to see what the students will create next!

We really did have a wonderful experience and can’t thank you enough for all the time, effort, and energy you put into making the week so great. I really appreciate that you designed a bespoke programme just for us, and am so pleased at how it worked out. Everything went really smoothly and I felt that it was pitched just right.  Both students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the week.

Thank you CREATE, it’s been a pleasure working with you all and I look forward to working with you again one day!

We would like to thank Lisa Flower for sharing her experiences and feedback with us. If you are interested in using 3D printing technologies for your own Summer school, STEM day or STEM week activities, we can work with you to create a bespoke package of projects, resources hardware, training and support to deliver yourself or delivered by one of our experienced team of STEM educators.
