Barry Wilmore International Space Station
Barry Wilmore with the printed socket wrench. NASA

Just to show how far reaching 3D printing has become, Astronaut Barry Wilmore of the International Space Station needed a socket wrench, but the problem with being over 200 miles above the earth is you cant just pop out and buy one.

So what did NASA do about that? they emailed him one, which he then 3D printed into a fully working socket wrench. No need for a supply drop, just email it! This was also the first time an object had been designed on earth then sent into space for manufacture.

Space Wrench

We’re not quite at the ‘beam me up’ stage, but ’email me up’ is the next best thing i’d say!

NASA have also very kindly shared that file for you to download from here so go ahead and take a look!
