Our loan of an Ultimaker 2 3D Printer though the Ultimaker CREATE Education Project has been a fantastic experience for our young people and staff.

The printer was primarily utilized on Wac Arts Interactive, a BBC Children in Need funded project based on the values of having fun and forming friendships for disabled young people. It has also been used by students on our Junior Wac programme, for 5-13 years old and the Wac Arts College, for 14-18 year olds at risk of exclusion.

Some of the young people taking part in Wac Arts Interactive were lucky enough to visit Ultimaker HQ, during an outreach to Manchester earlier this year, where our initial contact with The CREATE Education Project was made.

The name of their current workshop is A Brave New Mini World, a 3D Printing project to create their very own dystopian world for a stop motion animation installation for others to engage with and make their own short films.

Ideas haves been bounced about and designs developed varying from worlds containing giant sandwiches for buildings to spooky trees that have become amalgamated with pyramids, the young people will be pushing the boundaries of the reality we know and printing their ideas to be included in their exciting and dynamic miniature worlds.

Using a Kinect depth camera young people scanned themselves and objects into a computer and explored online repositories of free 3D objects to download. They manipulated these further in a piece of software called Sculptris to personalize and then prepared them for 3D Printing in Cura.
