Newcastle has a long tradition of engineering excellence. It is from Newcastle that great innovators such as Armstrong, Stephenson, Merz and Swan developed ideas that changed the world.

By engaging students, undertaking groundbreaking research, and working alongside governmental and industrial partners, Newcastle University continue to develop the city’s rich history in world-leading engineering, innovation and creativity.

The School of Engineering was formed in 2017 to augment our work across chemical, civil, electrical and electronic, marine and mechanical engineering with research spanning multiple engineering disciplines, from fundamental principles to multi-disciplinary projects.

With over 500 staff and 3200 students across 100 nationalities the university engineering department has leading research that is tackling global challenges such as climate change, sustainable energy, transport, water supply and waste management. All of this research is enabled by the provision world-class laboratories and facilities  – 3D printing included!

Most recently Newcastle University produced the first 3D printed cornea – the outer most layer of the human eye.
