Now that spring is in the air our thoughts have turned to the great outdoors and we were inspired by this great design that turns a plastic bottle into a watering can shared on YouMagine by Sylvain.
This object lends itself well to the “Describe It” and the “Describe and Draw It” activities as it is not immediately apparent what the object is for. These activities would also lead well into the “Imagine It” activity allowing pupils to develop a story based around discovering a use for the object.
Alternatively the watering can would be a good design to use with the “Improve It” activity, students could test how well the object works and make design improvements or redesign the item. This could be followed up with the “Advertise It” activity.
For schools with a garden or plant growing facilities, a set of these could be printed for students to use for watering the plants.
The Plastic Bottle Watering Can works well as an object to use with the following Object of the Week activities:
- Describe It
- Describe & Draw It
- Imagine It
- Improve It
- Advertise It

The open-ended activities are designed to be cross-curricular, for use across of range of ages/levels and weekly objects are selected to cover a range of applications and subject areas. Some objects may provide a platform for introducing or expanding on a specific topic area or as a springboard to a class project. Ideas for taking it further will be provided where applicable.
Resources include a comprehensive Teacher Guide which provides an overview of each activity and suggestions for how to deliver the activity in class. PowerPoint Interactive Classroom Activity Slides and a set of Student Worksheets are also available to support the activities.
